Interview with Kate Hill

I’m a fan of historical romances, and when they come with hunky Vikings, I stand up and take notice. I’d like to welcome Ellora’s Cave author Kate Hill today. I interviewed her about her new release Northman’s Pleasure. There is a contest with this post. Follow the directions below to enter!

Give us an elevator pitch for your book, Northland’s Pleasure.

Even a Viking winter can’t cool the heat between a willful princess and a fierce warrior.

Where did the inspiration for your book come from, and how much research have you needed to do during the writing of your hot Viking romance?

This story is a sequel to Northman’s Passion. Grim and Asgerd were introduced in that story, but they demanded one of their own. :-) I’ve written other Viking romances before and enjoy reading just about anything I can get my hands on about Vikings, so for me this book was more a matter of brushing up on Viking history than plunging into completely new research. In many ways it was easier to write this book than the first in a series because the world has already been established.

Describe the sights, sounds and scents we might experience if we were to visit Grim Hammerhand during a normal day.

Grim enjoys spending any free time he has in the forge. You’d probably hear a lot of clanging and sizzling. Most likely there would be plenty of smoke and heat–both in the forge and in the bed closet! The longhouse where he lives accommodates both people and animals. Since this is a romance novel, you’d see dozens of gorgeous Northmen walking around shirtless and swinging their swords. :-)

Why do you write romance, and what is it about historical romance that attracts you to the genre?

I’ve always enjoyed having romance mixed in with stories of action and adventure. I enjoy action scenes with old fashioned weapons, like swords and bows and arrows. Historical romance truly draws you out of today’s reality and most of the time that’s what I want when I’m reading.

Is there any part of the writing process that you find particularly challenging and why?

Honestly I think every book has its challenges. There’s always some point in the book, even one that is very carefully outlined, that something doesn’t quite work and I need to think about it sometimes for days or even weeks.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received as a writer?

It’s actually two pieces of advice that are in my opinion closely related–write what you love and define success by your standards, not someone else’s.

Northmans Pleasure

BLURB:

Legend says Grim Hammerhand is half wolf. Vowing never to marry, the muscular red-haired warrior saves his passion for the battlefield and the forge. That is, until the woman he secretly lusts after is abducted.

Asgerd has loved Grim for years, only to be ignored by the object of her desire. She has eluded the bonds of marriage, hoping that someday Grim will notice her, but her dreams are shattered when she is captured and defiled by the brutal warrior Stein.

After the king sends Grim to rescue his daughter and claim Stein’s land, the passion between the couple finally ignites. In the end, Grim’s mistrust of all women could destroy their one true chance for happiness.

  6. Hmmm my mind went straight into the gutter for this one! I think my favourite weapon would be the chastity belt! So much suffering all around without shedding blood. :-) Not sure whether that makes me kinky or evil?
