When I’m Feelin’ Blue….

Today’s Thursday Thirteen is brought to you by the color blue. (because it’s my favorite)

Thirteen Things about BLUE

1. Blue is my favorite color. I like it because it’s calming. There’s nothing better than looking at the sky on a day when there are no clouds. The clear color just makes me smile. I also have blue eyes.

2. Pantone has selected the color Blue Iris (PANTONE 18-3943) as the 2008 Color of the Year telling us: “Combining the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical and spiritual qualities of purple, Blue Iris satisfies the need for reassurance in a complex world, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement.”

3. In Iran, blue is the color of mourning while in the West the something blue bridal tradition represents love.

4. Blue conveys importance and confidence without being somber or sinister, hence the blue power suit of the corporate world and the blue uniforms of police officers. Long considered a corporate color, blue, especially darker blue, is associated with intelligence, stability, unity, and conservatism. From the About.com site.

5. Blue is a favorite color of both men and women of all ages. However, men have a much stronger preference for blue than women. It may be the calming effect of the color blue that makes it a popular color for both men and women or it could be the association of some shades of blue with authority figures, intelligence, and stability. About.com

6. You can feel blue, which isn’t a good thing. My Oxford dictionary says blue in this context means nervous, depressed, melancholy, dismal.

7. In Australia you can have a “blue” which means you argue or row with someone.

8. Once in a blue moon – a saying that means scarce or hardly ever or a rare event.

9. Blue moon can also mean an extra full moon in a year. Generally there are twelve full moons per year, one per month. Every two or three years there is an extra full moon due to the eleven extra days in each year.

10. There’s a song Blue Moon. Here’s the 1961 version by The Marcels.

11. Blue gemstones promote peace and are used to calm ragged emotions. They are used to provide relief to people who have difficulty sleeping or who have nightmares. They offer inspiration and enhance the quality of communication. Check out the meaning of other colored gemstones here.

12. What color are you? A quiz – surprisingly I was yellow :?:

13. Something can happen “out of the blue” meaning the something happened without warning. You can be “between the devil and the deep blue sea” which means you’re in an impossible situation.

Have I missed any common blue sayings or things? Oh, I just thought of something blue – The Blues Brothers. Man, I love that movie.

My favorite color is blue too! I took the quiz and guess what?
    BLUE

You give your love and friendship unconditionally. You enjoy long, thoughtful conversations rich in philosophy and spirituality. You are very loyal and intuitive.

    LOL Happy T13!

  2. Susan Helene Gottfried

    Happy TT, darling!

I think of the Tour Manager in shades of blue. He’s probably the only person I think of in terms of color, but I suppose since I’m stuck with him and all, that’s fitting.

Blue IS a lovely color. It’s the sky, and there are few things more lovely than a blue sky dotted with white, puffy clouds.

  3. Debora Dennis

Funny every time I use the “once in a blue moon” expression my kids look at me weird and roll their eyes. I was beginning to think I was the only one who uses it. Thanks! :)

  4. Tara S Nichols

I also love the color blue. I didn’t know, or rather I never looked into all the different meanings behind it. I wanted to dye my hair electric blue when I was 12 but all I managed was to paint my bedroom that color.

  5. Wylie Kinson

    Excellent list!
When I studied Renaissance art, the Virgin Mary was always easy to pick out because she was consistantly portrayed wearing a blue robe or head covering. It had to do with blue being the most expensive paint.

  6. December

it IS a calming peaceful color.

Lovely topic, I feel all mellow now!

  7. MsMenozzi

Yup, Blue is my favorite color, too! And my hubby’s, as well – which is nice, ’cause he looks sooooo handsome in blue…

What a neat topic! I enjoyed these; and I even went so far as to Google the Pantone color to see what it looked like! LOL!

Thanks for dropping by my T13, btw – I’ve fixed the bug that was obscuring half the post (I think).

    Cheers!
    Ciao for now!

  8. Debbie Mumford

Yep. Blue has always been my favorite color. Great list!!

  9. Amy Ruttan

I’m green. I’m calm and nuturing. Which I can believe. I’m pretty laid back.

I’m trying to get a TT done for SDoS but I got side tracked with edits (that are done) but I’m trying. :)

  10. Cassandra Curtis

Did you know that if you see a lot of blue in a person’s aura it means they are caring, sensitive, loving, helpful, loyal, helper, compassion, peaceful, desire to be of service and to help and support others, nurturing.

If the shade of blue is almost purple, like an indigo, then it signifies clarity, calm, deep inner feelings, love, seeker, introverted, inner knowing, authenticity, high, sense of inner values, artistic.

Of course, to know, you’d have to be able to see auras. :)

    Great TT, Shelley!

::Cass, whose aura is usually yellow, green, and with a swirling touch of indigo. :P ::

  11. Christina Phillips

My hubby has blue eyes. His eyes were the first thing I noticed about him and I think I fell in love with him at first sight based purely on that aspect!!!

  12. Alice Audrey

I’m Yellow too. I wonder what it takes to be blue on the quiz.

  13. J.K. Coi

Hey, I love the colour blue (although not so much as red). My car is blue, even my old house was blue (coincidence only). And Wylie when I studied art I was told that red was always the most expensive pigment, so go figure.
    Happy Thursday Thirteen!

  14. Bethanne

I’m GREEN! I think that’s nice. :D This was a great t13. I LOVE the color blue. As you might tell from my blog and website. LOL

  15. pussreboots

DH and I had a blue very similar to Blue Iris as our wedding color. Friends and family jokingly called it the “Crisco blue” wedding.

  16. Ava Rose Johnson

I used to think that green was my fave color, but I think you’ve sold me on blue

  17. Lesley

Well isn’t that ironic. I’m blue! My favorite color is pink! Every time I think of that Blue Moon song I think of the movie Joe Vs. the Volcano. One of my favorites!

  18. Gina Ardito

Love blue! And I also have blue eyes. Blue iris is an ideal color. Couldn’t agree more.

  19. Heather

Count me among those who love blue — and this topic!

Of course, if you ever are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, you might find yourself swearing a blue streak.

  20. Shelley Munro

Debora – I hear it quite often on TV. Your kids must watch the wrong programs.

Tara – electric blue hair sounds great to me.

    Wylie – that’s interesting! I must google some paintings…

  21. Brenda ND

Thanks for the color quiz!

  22. Shelley Munro

December – I’m glad you’re all mellow.

Ms. Menozzi – my hubby looks great in blue as well.

Christina – ditto with the blue eyes. I like hubby’s eyes but that wasn’t what I noticed first.

  23. Shelley Munro

Heather – LOL That’s a great one to add to my list.

  24. Jane

Blue is my favorite, too. I learned a lot about blue. I took the quiz and it says that I’m green.

  25. Paige Tyler

    Interesting facts!

    *hugs*
    Paige

  26. Christina Phillips

 Shelley!! In my defence I was only 15 years old!!!!
