Why Didn’t Someone Warn Me….

…that a person uses different muscles climbing up and down mountains to when they cycle, walk and run?

OR:

…to take better care of my big toe – the same toe that I injured while ice skating when I was in my teens, the same toe the Goal Attack or Goal Shoot managed to jump on every netball season after that. I’ve given up counting the number of times that toe nail has bruised and dropped off. Another one coming up to add to the number.

I Hurt. :cry:

  1. We didn’t think we had to.

    Any activity that you decide to do, especially one you’re not doing on a day to day basis will cause muscle aches. To circumvent this, it is wise to prepare your body before you go up steep inclines on mountains by going up and down several flights of stairs either every second or third day. On off days do something else. Mountain trails can be more strenuous than you thought, especially if they look easy. Also, gaining altitude is hard on your body and internal organs, so it’s best to have several rest periods on your way up the trail.

    Many years ago, a friend of mine decided she wanted to do a mountain cross-country ski trip for a week during her vacation. She ran, swam, played tennis, rode her bicycle to work weather permitting. When she returned to work after her holiday she said she’d thought her legs would die the third day out and she’d never be able to get back to civilization. Apparently, she hadn’t trained enough by actually going cross-country skiing…because you use different muscles.

    So, Shelley, you have to go hiking up mountains in a couple of days, again and again. Do short trips with picnics.


  2. LOL – Barbara, I do use stairs – frequently. Whenever there are stairs to climb I’ll use them instead of escalators or lifts. That’s the weird thing. I shouldn’t have felt as sore as I did because I am reasonably active and do stairs as you say.

    Never mind. The sore muscles are easing. No doubt I’ll be fit as a fiddle in a couple of days. (Weird saying, that!)


  3. Sounds like an excuse to get a massage to me! Or a nice, long soak in a tub with epsom salts.

    Hang in there and take care of yourself!


  4. Ouch! Sorry, Shelley.

    Climbing uses far more muscles than stairs. My first climbing experience made me aware of every single muscle running up and down my arms and legs. Stretching helps a lot.

    Sorry about your poor “Achilles” toe, too.

    Sorry about your big toe boo-boo and sore muscles, but I’ll bet the views from the mountain were worth the pain!!


  6. Susan = I soaked in the spa bath at the hotel, which was very nice!

    Maria – my arm muscles are okay but my leg ones hurt quite a bit. I feel almost back to normal today, so at least I didn’t hurt for long.

    Wylie – the view was well worth it. We had two sunny, fairly cloudless days. The bad weather closed in as we left so we couldn’t have planned better.

    Shelley, I agree with Susan—a nice long soak (more than once) with Epson salt or a jacuzzi if you know of one available.

  10. I would say poor Shelley but it sounds like you had a lovely time anyway. We’ve had rain and overcast skies here for about 3 weeks now so i don’t really remember what the out of doors looks like, let alone gone gallivanting about in them. So really, I’m just super jealous.

  11. LOL – Jory – the views were great, and hubby and I had lots of fun so yes, the pain was worth it!

    Julie – it’s funny, but I always prefer showers to soaking in a tub. I have to admit though that I covet that spa bath. Very nice it was!

    Amy – it was so HOT today that I felt quite lethargic. Even the lure of Middlemarch didn’t help my brain work very fast. :mrgreen:
