The Misunderstood Beta Hero

My special guest today is Loose Id author, Lori Toland. She’s here celebrating the release of her book Trust in Me. Over to Lori…

Trust in MeI love Beta Heroes. You know, he’s the guy who is totally geeky. He probably wears glasses and typically can fix your computer or entertainment center. Or he may be the guy who has his nose in a book and has a deadly sharp sense of humor. He might also be the science or math go-to guy who spends his days slaving over equations.

But once you get him into bed, he blows your mind. In between books and equations, he has been thinking about the many ways to sex you up and make you beg for more. He’s what a like to call a Beta to the world but an Alpha between the sheets and he is the sexiest hero alive.

Some famous Beta heroes are Sherlock Holmes, Gregory House and Indiana Jones. All of these guys are sexy and they use their brains to get where they need to be. They may be snarky or polite but they are incredibly smart and they always get laid.

Tristan is a computer nerd, with the glasses to go with it. He never thought Jamie Hunter, the high school quarterback and hot man on campus would be gay, let alone be interested in him. One hot August night changes all of that and Tristan for the rest of his life. Ten years later, he meets the man he fell in love with. Can he let go of the past and risk his heart again?

Thank you Shelley, for having me by to talk about Trust In Me. I hope you all enjoy it!

Some of my favorite heros are betas. Yeah, alpha heroes kick ass, but a lot of the really powerful books have been betas.

Hi, Lori. Thanks for visiting me today. I have to admit that I lend toward the alpha male character, but I do like an intelligent hero. There’s nothing sexier than a man who can talk with you. None of those caveman grunts required!!

I like alpha heros when they turn out to be sensitive guys, otherwise beta does it for me!

All the best for the new release! TRUST ME sounds interesting!

The beta hero is a hottie because he seems to shock and surprise….

  5. Shelley Munro

Savannah, that’s so true. Betas are a bit like ice bergs with hidden depths.

Being a Sci-fi fantasy geek, one of my favorite shows is Stargate. And while Richard Dean Anderson is hot, I liked Michael Shanks alot too. And of course RDA played the brainy but adventurous MacGyver back in the 80s.

I love the Betas as much as the Alpha’s. :)

Beta heroes do it for me every time, especially when they go Alpha during sex. *fans self. Thanks for stopping to say hi :D

I love me a good beta hero just as I love me a good alpha hero :-) One of my favorites is Mr. Bingley from Pride and Prejudice :-)

  9. Mary Kirkland

I think Gregory House is my favorite. I can totally see what you are saying about Beta heroes.

I never thought of Indiana Jones as a beta hero but he is :-) I’m usually more of an alpha hero gal but enjoy the beta hero every now and then. I’ve added “Trust in Me” to my wishlist – sounds like a good book!

Alpha or Beta — oh my, what a decision! The only time I require an alpha is in a were animal.
Otherwise, as long as he treats the heroine well, isn’t an idiot, and doesn’t whine, I don’t really care.

I love the geeks – it might be because I’m married to one in real life :)

I do enjoy Beta Heroes. I can’t think of one offhand, but they can often leave you satisfied.

I’m a little taken aback by the examples of beta heroes in the article. I would not have said any of those heroes are beta heroes, especially not House.

The assumption here seems to be that alpha males must be dumb and beta males must be smart. I really don’t see that, either.

To my mind, beta males are essentially, men who have their assets but who are not leaders. They do not take the initiative in romance, and probably not elsewhere, either. This isn’t to say they don’t have their assets, but they’re not natural leaders. They’re not forceful. They’re not arrogant. They’re only going to take the lead if there’s nobody else to do so, and even then, unless it’s a problem which lies within their specialty, they’re likely to be indecisive.

I can’t at all see Holmes, Jones or especially House as betas! House, NOT arrogant?? Jones, not take the lead on an expedition? Holmes, defer to anyone else’s opinion but his own? (And, in fact, House was modeled after Holmes.)

I’m not a lover of the segment of alpha males who are jerks, but I’m also not a lover of extreme beta males, either. My preference is the gamma, but they seem to have fallen somewhat out of fashion. Too bad.
