Food Glorious Food!

Thursday Thirteen

I saw a Miss Piggy quote in a newspaper insert that came through our mailbox this week. Aha! I thought. That’s a perfect topic for a Thursday Thirteen. So, THIRTEEN QUOTES ABOUT FOOD

1. “Never eat more than you can lift.” ~ Miss Piggy

2. “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” ~ James Beard

3. “I am not a glutton – I am an explorer of food.” ~ Erma Bombeck

4. “An old-fashioned vegetable soup, without any enhancement, is a more powerful anti carcinogen than any known medicine.” ~ James Duke, MD

5. “As with most fine things, chocolate has its season. There is a simple memory aid that you can use to determine whether it is the correct time to order chocolate dishes: any month whose name contains the letter A, E, or U is the proper time for chocolate.” ~ Sandra Boynton

6. “My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.” ~ Buddy Hackett

7. “My wife dresses to kill. She cooks the same way.” ~ Henny Youngman

8. “The primary requisite for writing well about food is a good appetite.” ~ A.J. Liebling

9. “Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat.” ~ Alex Levine

10. “If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it probably needs a little more time in the microwave.” ~ Lori Dowdy

11. “It’s important to watch what you eat. Otherwise, how are you going to get it into your mouth ?” ~ Matt Diamond

12. “One of life’s mysteries is how a 1kg box of candy can make a woman gain 2kg.”

13. “The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.”

And an extra one because it made me laugh:

“Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but she can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake.”

I’ll admit I love food. I eat a varied diet with dishes influenced from different parts of the world. Italian food is one of my favorites but I also enjoy Pacific Rim food, which is often seafood with Pacific or Asian influences. Pacific Rim food is like a melting pot of New Zealand ethnic groups combined with our fresh produce. Like most Westerners, I probably eat too much, but some of my happiest memories involve food and meals with friends. I’m a capable cook and enjoy it when I’m in the mood.

What is your favorite type of food? Do you like eating and cooking?

Hmmm… My favorite type of food? I’ll have to go with Indian – I love the variety and the textures and the spices.

Do I like eating and cooking?

One look tells you all you need to know, there. Well, I don’t enjoy the cooking so much, but I know I’m at least competent in the kitchen. That’s reassuring.

    Fun list, btw.

    Happy TT!
    Ciao!

Ooh, Indian food. Why didn’t I think of that when I did my post? I’m obviously writing too hard this week and losing brain cells.
When we visited India the food was wonderful. It was the only time I’ve walked into restaurants and been able to order practically anything off the menu because so many of them were vegetarian only.

  3. Lanie Fuller

Oh, those are some funny food quotes. I think the last one was my favorite, LOL.

As for favorite foods…hmm. That’s a tough one. Right now, the only thing that sounds good, though, is some Potato Skins–the TGIF ones. Those are sooo good!

    Great TT, Shelley!

  4. Stephanie Adkins

Ahh Miss Piggy … gotta love her. :) I used to LOVE watching The Muppet Show when I was little. Happy Thursday! *HUGS*

  5. Cassandra Curtis

Ahh, I love the Miss Piggy quote! Sounds like good advice.

    Very fun T13!

  6. Adelle Laudan

Mmm, I’m going out for a steak dinner with my best friend tonight. Fun list! Happy T13!

  7. Jennifer McKenzie

I’m totally trying to remember if I ever ate more than I could life.
    I probably have.
    Great list of quotes!!!!

  8. Jennifer McKenzie

*sigh* It’s early here on the U.S. West Coast. “Life” should be “Lift” in that last post.

  9. Roberta Harwell

My favorite food is whatever I don’t have to cook. What ‘s so strange is my hubby is bringing home dinner tonight. Even though I do enjoy cooking, I just love it when my hubby gives me a break and brings something home.

But seriously, we enjoy all types of food. I love Italian, Chinese, Old Southern Cooking, etc.

    Have a great day.

Mmmm food. Bad post for a pregnant lady.

I love to cook too, I just haven’t been able to manage it because the smell of cooking food sends me running and then I can’t eat it.

My kitchen is in a sorry state of despair, but I’m cleaning it today and I’m going to try to make sweet and sour meatballs with veggies and rice. The meatballs, thankfully, are pre cooked and I’m just throwing them in the crock pot. Here’s hoping.

  11. Alice Audrey

I’ve never eaten food I couldn’t lift, but I’m willing to give it a try.

  12. Susan Helene Gottfried

It’s lunchtime and I’m, of course, munching on my home-made trail mix… Need I say more, my friend?

  13. J.K. Coi

MMM. So bad for you, but I love pasta. The red, heavy ragu kind.

And I love fruit. Almost any kind. Give me fresh, sweet perfectly ripe fruit and I’m in heaven.

  14. Heather

Love the Sandra Boynton quote! I admit that I am not that adventurous when it comes to food, especially anything spicy. Maybe if I had a cast iron stomach…

  15. Fedora

Definitely love food, but admit I’m not a great cook–I can do a few things passably. I love chocolate, of course, and most Japanese food. Also most things fried and yes, I also have a sweet tooth. So… I guess if it’s bad for you, I probably like it

‘My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.’ – LOL!!

I can laugh at that one because that was never my choice with my mom. She adores cooking and I adore eating, but definitely not cooking.

Over the years I’ve learned to paste on an interested smile when people launch into vivid detail about how to prepare food. You’d be surprised by how people take it for granted that women must be born with an innate desire for every ingredient in everyone else’s recipes. *yawnsville*

  17. Shelley Munro

Fedora – I have a sweet tooth. I blame my father! I inherited it.

Julia – LOL – I’ll know not to do that if I meet you in person. I don’t need to know every ingredient. Um…my SIL is a bit more like that.

  18. Paz

I love all the topics that you come up with for Thursday Thirteen.

    Paz

Thanks, Paz. I enjoy doing a TT each week.
