Horses and Captured & Seduced

Fotolia_545240_L

We always had horses when I was a child growing up on a farm. My father bred horses for polo and purchased a thoroughbred stallion for this purpose. The horse’s official name was Grey Cavalier and as the name suggests, he was a blue/grey. My father used to take us to the thoroughbred yearling sales, and we’d sit there quiet as anything, frightened to move in case we purchased a horse during the auction by mistake.

The breeding and pedigrees of the thoroughbreds fascinated me, and I used to study the sale catalogues and the family trees of each yearling. All thoroughbreds originate from three stallions, which were brought into England and bred with larger British mares. The stallions were the Byerly Turk, the Godolphin Arabian and the Darley Barb, and all thoroughbred horses have one of these three stallions in their pedigree.

Later on, when I started going out with my husband, he and his father were part owners of a race horse called Paul’s Gold. As a result I attended the races quite often and cheered on Paul’s Gold. She won lots of races and was eventually sold as a broodmare.

Fast forward a few years—well, quite a few, actually—and I was in the planning stages of a sci-fi/paranormal romance. I wanted an Earth heroine and an alien hero, but I struggled to find a way for them to meet. I didn’t want your basic kidnapping, so I needed to decide on a reason for the hero to capture and kidnap the heroine. Suddenly, inspiration struck. I decided to make my heroine a jockey and my hero in need of someone to train his hell-horse for a special race called the Dowry Derby.

Of course, my alien horses are very different from Earth horses, and Camryn, my heroine, has a big challenge in store for her if she wants to train a hell-horse ready for the race. The aliens have promised to return her home, but only if she helps them win the race.

Here’s the blurb for Captured & Seduced:

A shapeshifter and a wizard slugging it out, an alien world and a hell-horse…

Jockey Camryn O’Sullivan is an alcoholic on a downward spiral after the death of her husband. When aliens kidnap her, she’s both terrified and reluctantly fascinated by Ryman Coppersmith. She’s positive the weird attraction to her abductor is an anomaly. Something to ignore. She’ll train the aliens’ horse and they’ll return her home. Simple. There’s no need for sex or a stubborn male kitty-cat to replace the precious memories of her husband.

Murder. Betrayal. Banishment.

Feline shapeshifter Ry has experienced treachery of the worst kind. When his foster brother—the man who betrayed him—proposes a wager on a hell-horse race, the lure to clear his name is irresistible.

Camryn’s arrival triggers a jump in his already overactive sex drive. It’s a struggle to keep his hands off his beautiful captive. Something in his mysterious feline background compels him to chase her and the passion firing between them soars out of control. Ry doesn’t understand the mechanics of their attraction but knows he can’t afford to lose Camryn…despite his promise to return her home.

Have you been to the races before? Did you want to have a pony when you were growing up? And did you read books about ponies? (I sure did!)

The Little Black Dress

The subject of clothes has been on my mind recently, since I often think of clothing during the polishing stage of a manuscript. I’m working on Seized & Seduced (Jannike’s story) and Jannike has spent most of the story wearing the same blue tunic and black trews with boots. She does have a set of lacy red lingerie that she picked up during her vacation on Earth, but that’s it when it comes to the clothing stakes. I’ve been thinking she needs an occasion to wear a little black dress.

In Captured & Seduced the women of the Indy get new dresses to wear to a ball. Here’s a short excerpt to give you an idea of what I’m dealing with when it comes to Jannike.

The gowns were the same style although different colors to suit their complexions. They required a base garment beneath to yank in their waists and force their breasts upward.

“What was Ry thinking?” Jannike wheezed. “I can’t breathe. How the devil do I fight in this?”

“I don’t believe you’re meant to fight,” Mogens said in his dry way. “It’s a ball. You’re meant to dance.”

“We can always poke out eyes with our fingernails,” Kaya said cheerfully.

“Or stomp on people’s feet,” Camryn added. “Although maybe one look at our hands will do the trick.” She held them up for inspection. “I scrubbed for half an hour and couldn’t remove the dirt.”

“True. My fingernails might work.” Jannike lifted the skirts of her long hunter green gown to inspect one shoe. “The shoes don’t look robust enough for kicking. I’ll need to stick to stomping.” She scratched the back of her neck, unused to the ornate hairstyle as much as the unaccustomed finery.

“This is a dance,” Ry said sternly from the doorway of the hotel room they’d rented. “There won’t be any need to fight.”

It’s said Coco Chanel was the instigator of the little black dress. In 1926 one of her designs for a simple black dress appeared in Vogue. Vogue said the dress would become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe—a black dress that would fit every occasion and make a woman feel good about herself. Something classic that a woman could dress up or down.

Karl Lagerfeld famously said, “One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress.”

I have a Pinterest board for Little Black Dresses, but the truth is I don’t have one of my own. When I was younger, I didn’t suit black. Now that I’m a little older, my skin tones have changed and I do sometimes wear black. I’m on the lookout for a little black dress and maybe one day I’ll find one I adore.

Do you own a little black dress?

Sexy Mornings/Morning Blues

My Sexy Saturday

The theme for this week is A Sexy Morning. Don’t you just love it when you see characters have a snuggle down day that starts with an awesome morning? Or how about making love at dawn on a planet far away? Or watching the morning sky together for the very first time as the sun tops the ridge?  This is a theme about that special time of the day where only lovers go. Do they wake up next to each other and wonder how they got there? Or are they all over one another?

I’m a bit of a rebel, which is probably not a surprise to my husband. My excerpt comes from Captured & Seduced, the first book in my House of the Cat series. Camryn, my heroine, is fighting a losing battle trying to keep Ry at arm’s length, and she wakes up with a hangover and Ry. But that’s not the bad part…

The others started to stir. Camryn grabbed her clothes and turned her back on him to dress. Ry watched her the entire time. She felt it, fingers clumsy in her self-consciousness. The spot he’d touched on her shoulder itched beneath her tunic.

Rustling clothes behind her indicated Ry was dressing. The instinct to turn and watch almost got the better of her. Almost.

“Ah, you’re awake,” Mogens said, coming from inside the tender. Camryn noted his clear disapproval before he lifted his head to scan the angry green clouds low on the horizon. His face darkened rapidly. “Bad tidings in the clouds.”

Camryn fidgeted, her shoulder itchy and irritable beneath her clothes, the sullen trot-trot-trot in her head adding to her misery.

Tsking, Mogens studied her instead. “What is wrong with you, child? Have you been bitten by an insect?”

“Um no.” A weird sort of insect to leave tattoos while a person slept.

“Let me see,” Mogens said. “The last thing we need is for our trainer to become ill.”

“Show Mogens.” Ry’s soft voice came from behind. It wasn’t a request.

Camryn turned her back and allowed Mogens to lift her shirt. Chill bumps chased across her skin, blown by the cool morning breeze.

A hiss escaped the seer. “Ry, I told you to leave her alone. Too late now.” His eyes rolled back in his head and his high-pitched voice danced up and down in a singsong pattern. “The ghost walks beside you still. He has not left and will not leave while you need him. Bad day. Bad tidings.”
