A jaffa is a sweet with an orange flavored outer covering and a chocolate center. They are round in shape, and you’ll often hear jaffas rolling on the floor, especially in the movies. Their round shape makes them escape easily! They’re an Australian and New Zealand institution.

Each year Cadbury’s, the company that makes jaffas in New Zealand, releases 30,000 of their jaffas on Baldwin Street in Dunedin, NZ (the steepest street in the world). This occurs during their chocolate festival.

I like jaffas—it’s the combination of orange and chocolate that takes me back to childhood.

JAFA is also a slang term for an Aucklander. It is short for Just Another F****** Aucklander. I guess, by definition, I am a JAFA Smile

What is your favorite sweet?

We have jaffa cakes in the UK, made by McVities, which are sponge topped with orange jelly and then covered in dark chocolate – but we don’t have Jaffas – they sound divine!

  5. anna@herding cats & burning soup

OOo I’ve never heard of those! I so want some! I wonder if any import shops here have them. Hmmm.

And gah! They waste that much chocolate on the streets?? That’s so..ahhhh. That’s a crazy number of little rolling chocolates. What happens when they all hit the bottom??

    • Shelley Munro

They also have giant jaffas, which are double the size of the ones above, and they use these in the race. Each one is numbered and they sell corresponding tickets to raise money for charity. The first five jaffas through the gate at the bottom of Baldwin street win a prize.

Those sound really good! I crave different sweets depending on my mood, but you can’t go wrong with pina colada-flavored Jelly Bellys.

    • Shelley Munro

Same! Not that I eat many sweets these days. I haven’t tried pina colada Jelly Bellys, but hubby and I ate some jaffas tonight in the name of research.
