Nothing.

Thursday Thirteen

I’m feeling really tired today, and I can’t think of a topic for my TT. I decided to google “nothing” and this is what I came up with…

1. Nothing is something that doesn’t exist.

2. You can buy “nothing”. It costs US$4.84 here and is actually a vial of emptiness. They advertise it as the present for someone who has everything.

3. Director Vincenzo Natali made a movie called Nothing in 2003. Read about it here.

4. Nov 29 is Buy Nothing day, a strike against comercialism. I think my husband would approve!

5. Sinead O’Connor sang about Nothing Comparing 2 U

6. There’s a tattoo and body piercing place in Atlanta called All or Nothing Tattoo and Art. They’ve won awards.

7. My sales ranking on several of my books at Amazon this week was nothing. I’m glad they’ve fixed that!!

8. Tristan Campbell is a landscape photographer based in Harrogate. He’s posted some of his photos at his blog Absolutely Nothing. They’re amazing, and I wouldn’t have found them if I hadn’t googled nothing.

9. I found Nothing Bundt Cakes here. They look yummy even though I’m not sure what they are exactly.

10. And while we’re on the subject of food, I found Nothing but Noodles. Sounds good to me!

11. Shakespeare went on about Much Ado About Nothing

12. Nothing ventured, nothing gained – means if you don’t join in or start then you can’t achieve anything.

13. Nothing to crow about – there’s nothing special or to feel good about.

Do you think nothing is a negative or a positive word?

LOL! I never knew nothing could be so interesting! Or entertaining! Love your TT this week! =D

  2. Hootin' Anni

That 2nd one is something ‘to die for’….I want a bottle of nothing. LOLOLOL

My 13 is posted….all flowers in our yard, done in a collage for you. Drop by if you can find time. Happy Thursday.

  3. Stephanie Adkins

See, even when you can’t think of anything to post, you always come up with something great. LOL Happy Thursday!

Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with nothing.

Like having nothing to do for a change. Or hear nothing but the birds singing in the morning.

As an artist, I was trained to use ‘nothing’ (negative space) to create something with more impact.

So ‘nothing’ is okay in my book. Without ‘nothing’, we’d have less than nothing.

    Interesting post!

I think it’s one of those in between words – a word that can be positive … or negative depending on mood and connotation. Wow, that’s too much to think about this early in the AM.

BTW, that vial of nothing is gonna hit the Christmas list next year for the FIL – the original man with everything!

  6. Adelle Laudan

I think the word nothing sits on the fence.

ie: My life is filled with nothing
    verses
The test results showed nothing wrong

    Happy T13!

  7. Harriet

    Nothing sounds pretty interesting.

  8. Eleni Konstantine

Shelley, this reminds me of a story of a man in Greece, who was so sick of people coming into his cafe and ordering nothing. So he invented a drink called, you guessed it, Nothing (Tipota in Greek). So a person who asked for nothing, got Nothing!!

The Tristan Campbell photos are lovely! Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favorites. Here’s a joke that cracks my class up:
    What is 10+5 minus 15? What is 3+6 minus 9? What is 17 +3 minus 20?
    All that work for nothing!

    Happy T13!

  10. Alice Audrey

Humph. I thought #2 would at least be full of vacuum. But no. It isn’t even that.

  11. Debra Kayn

I don’t like when I ask someone what is wrong and they say “Nothing.”

I absolutely love it when I have “Nothing” to do. Aw…the things I can think of to do, lol.

Btw, I now have Sinead O’Conner’s song stuck in my head! rofl

    Great post

  12. Sidhe

I think ‘nothing’ is pretty neutral. It’s kind of like tofu and takes on the flavour of whatever the word is being applied to.

  13. Marissa Alwin

Nothing matters very much, and few things matter at all.
Great topic! LOL Google is awonderful thing!

  14. Susan Helene Gottfried

Why does nothing have to be negative OR positive? Isn’t it all about context?

I sound like Trevor again, don’t I? Maybe that boy needs to come out and play. That’ll solve your nothing problem!

(btw, I’m glad to hear you’ve been re-ranked. This is yet another reason why I’m not about to revoke my Amazon blockade.)

  15. Sarah @ TM2TS

I think nothing can be both positive and negative. It depends on how you use it, much like a lot of words :)
    Yeah, I got “nothing’ :P

  16. Heather

Absolutely “nothing” wrong with this post. I love it!

  17. Voronda

“Nothing” humm never ever thought about the negative or the positive if I had to guess like many of the other I would say it comes down to the context you are using it in. I have “nothing” else.

  18. Shelley Munro

I’ve loved all your takes on “nothing”. My brain just wouldn’t work yesterday. It went on strike whenever I tried to introduce possible TT topics. I was surprised how much nothing I could find!!

  19. Amy Ruttan

My favorite play is about nothing.

Much Ado .. and I believe Seinfeld was a sitcom about, nothing.

  20. Suzanne

The word nothing grates on my nerves.

Nothing much, is a negative answer hiding the underlying, so much is wrong. lol..

What are you doing? Nothing… again, usually conceals something is going on.

And I think it’s been said, What is wrong?
    Nothing.

People don’t like to list the ailments, their ups and downs etc but don’t they realise we all have similiar ups and downs. lol.

    Great Post Shelly

  21. Fedora

Hmm… I think nothing can be a good thing sometimes–for instance, it’s awesome when the answer to “what’s wrong?” is actually “nothing” (not the I’m-actually-furious-with-you-but-you-ought-to-know-about-what “nothing” but the real “nothing”!) And I love when someone asks, “So, what do you have planned for the weekend?” and we can actually answer, “Nothing!” It’s lovely to be able to just kick back and do well… nothing! ;)

  22. julia

As soon as I read your T13 topic, I laughed! My family has always played around with the word ‘nothing’. We give it a Godfather-type accent, and it becomes sort of rebellious.

    ‘Whatcha doing?’

‘Nuttin’ (emphasis on the first syllable)

So we have fun with nothing.

  23. R.J. Lebeau

Suicidal Tendencies had a song called “Give Me Your Nothing”. I had no idea what the song was about. They rap too fast!

  24. Janice~

Interesting post, and I can’t say it was about nothing because it was about something.

    Happy TT.

    Janice~

  25. Ms Menozzi

    Dunno…

    I got nothin’. ;)

  26. Lauren Murphy

Number 2 is full of greatness. I have a few people I’d give that gift too… but I think I can just make that myself lol!! Great list!
