Lie to Me

Thursday Thirteen

Mr. Munro and I have been watching Lie to Me, a show where they use body language and facial expressions to solve a crime. I haven’t heard much buzz about the show online, but we really enjoy it, and for a writer, it’s pure gold. I especially like the way they integrate body language from well known people such as past presidents and celebrities.

Here’s an intro to the show if you haven’t seen it:

Thirteen Anxious/Impatient/Nervous/Tense/Fearful Expressions

1. Clear throat

2. Rapid eye blink

3. Wide eyes

4. Perspire – palms, face, neck, armpits (cold sweat)

5. Tense lips, neck, shoulder muscles

6. Raspy voice (unable to speak)

7. Pale skin

8. Wet lips with tongue/touch lips with finger

9. Bobbing/jumping Adam’s Apple in male

10. Dilated pupils

11. scratching, rubbing, pinching or holding parts of the body

12. Clenched fists

13. Flaring nostrils

Source: my thirteen was taken from an article on Cerridwen author Joanna Waugh’s website. Here’s the link to her list of Body Language Cues to Emotion. Joanna also has heaps of links and resources for the historical writer.

Have you seen the show Lie For Me? If not, do you watch crime shows and which ones are your favorites?

This is good stuff. I’ve never heard of this show. I like to watch unsolved mysteries.
    Happy T13!

  2. Ella

Haven’t watched it, but I don’t watch much television right now. I used to like watching unsolved mysteries.

  3. Brenda ND

I haven’t watched this show, but maybe I’ll start. Thanks.

  4. Inez Kelley

Sounds cool, lots of clues for writers there too.

  5. Jory Strong

Absolutely love Lie to Me! Hope it gets a second season.

  6. Babette James

I haven’t seen the show, but sounds interesting. Thank you for the Joanna Waugh link. Great resource to use when I get stuck on using the same old descriptions over and over.
    Happy T13

  7. Joy

Genius List!!! Always enjoy your T13’s. ;)

  8. Jennifer McKenzie

I LOVE that show. It’s so cool!!!!!! I watched it every single week.

  9. Alice Audrey

I’ve never heard of Lie to Me before, but it sounds interesting.

As to your list. *clearing throat and scratching body part* I never do any of that. :)

  10. Elise Logan

Great list. Thanks – and according to this list, I may be the most stressed/anxious person in the universe. lol

  11. LingoVise

I’ll watch for this one DVD – that’s how I catch up on TV. I love murder mysteries… Midsomer Murders and Murder, She Wrote are two old favorite guilty pleasures.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. Happy TT!

  12. Debra Kayn

I haven’t seen the show. Sounds interesting! Love the TT, great to use in my writing.

  13. Kaige

Lie to Me is awesome! And we love it for the exact same reasons. Even found our kids trying to catch one of their friends in a lie using the body language cues from it once. Awesome.

  14. Shelley Munro

Lie to Me really is a good show and I find myself scrutinizing people closely to watch their expressions. Some uncharitable people might call it staring!

Alice – sometimes the expressions cross a face so quickly you don’t realize it. You’d be surprised what your face can reveal.

Jory – I hope it goes to a second season too. The first season has only just started here in NZ. I think we’ve had 3 shows so far.

  15. Shelley Munro

LingoVise – those are two of my favorites too. I also like some of the Agatha Christie adaptations. Miss Marple always cracks me up because she’s so nosy.

Kaige – I bet that was funny to see. Did your kids learn anything interesting about their friends?

  16. Heather

The show doesn’t sound familiar, but what an excellent list! Happy T13!

  17. Janice~

I’ve been meaning to watch Lie to Me, but either I get distracted with my writing or hubby puts in a movie.

    Happy TT.
