This is a portion of the College Glacier in Alaska. We were able to get quite close and witnessed a calving, which is where a hunk of ice falls into the water. This was taken before the calving and you could hear the ice crack and shift then it toppled.
We sailed past chunks of floating ice, some a pretty blue.
And this is me bundled up against the cold on the approach to the glacier. It’s a beautiful part of the world with pristine water and air and gorgeous scenery.
That sounds scary. I hear some of those ice chunks that break off are quite large.
This looks like a great trip!
I still remember your descriptions of the pies at your last trip; makes my mouth water, though I felt bad you didn’t get any veggie ones. :)
Mary,
It’s very impressive watching a calving. Some of the chunks are huge, but the ships aren’t allowed to go too close.
A Catherine – Ah, yes. The great pie saga. Hubby thought it was hilarious. I wasn’t so impressed, although I have to agree that the pies looked delicious.
