The Big Cat Shifter Round-Up

Interview with paranormal author Shai August

Interview with Shai August

Today, I’m excited to welcome Shai August to my blog. Shai August is a country girl with a big imagination, more than a touch of wanderlust and a never-ending desire to live in both an RV traveling the world and a library. Her love language is words of affirmations followed by books, bacon, and bourbon.

Shai August, AuthorShe’s a born and bred Louisiana native but is currently doing an impression of a yellow rose of Texas. She is fluent in English, sarcasm and memes. Her goal is to write fast paced, character driven paranormal fiction featuring women of color.

Shai, hello and welcome to my corner of the world! Please tell us a little about yourself and what draws you to write paranormal romance.

Thank you for having me! Really not much to tell, I’m rather boring in the typical work, eat, sleep, and read cycle of life but at some point, in the last few years my imagination outgrew my head and I had to start telling stories or go crazy.

I can’t pinpoint to you when I fell in love with the paranormal but being from Louisiana, there has always been an overlay of stories of witches, voodoo and the rougarou or loup garoux to power my daydreams and these were the types of books and shows I found myself drawn to the most.

Then as a teenager I fell heavily into Harlequin romances devouring them by the dozens.

Plus, I’m a complete sucker for love and lust at first sight romances and writing paranormal romance has allowed me to combine my loves of complex world building of fantasy, the romance of Harlequin with supernatural elements.

Shifters are my favorites when it comes to paranormal romance. Tell us a little about the shifters in your The Rare and the Unknown world. How did you come up with the idea for your shifter world?

Who hasn’t fallen in book love with a sexy werewolf or dragon? Shifters are my favorite too, but I’ll never turn down a sexy Gandulf (hint never Google ‘sexy Gandulf’). I created my Rare and Unknown world because I wanted, no needed shifters and the women they chased to be more reflective of me and my tastes.

When I was planning my first book, I made a conscious decision to make my shifters people of color and that opened up a world of diversity of characters and more importantly, the diversity of mythology and the expanded animal kingdom to pull from… I’ve got shifters of all shapes and sizes, the traditional werewolves, lions, bears and dragons but also elephants, hippos, huma, and more.

What sort of research did you do during the writing of your The Rare and the Unknown series?

My birthday is in August (hence the Shai August) and I’ve told everyone to give me books on zoology and mythology – no matter the origin Greek, Persian, Brazilian, First Nations, African nations, give them all to me because I’ve attempted to pull aspects of each mythos and stitch them into what I hope will be a quilt of a thousand stories that make up The Rare and The Unknown universe.

Tell us about your daily writing routine. Do you have any tips for other writers who might be having a difficult time keeping their butt in front of their computer?

I’m a 5am writer and I try to also be a 5pm writer, too. I focus hard and use the Pomodoro Technique which is time management technique that breaks down work tasks into intervals of work then break then work, etc. It has been tremendously helpful in making me stay in the seat longer and training myself to write longer.

There is even a Pomodoro Chrome extension that will block websites like Pinterest and Facebook which is my constant distraction.

It also helps to decide what you’re going to write before you put your butt in the chair.

Your bio mentions you have wanderlust. What country is at the top of your must-visit list and why?

There are so many! Can I do a top five instead of just one? Great Britain followed closely by China with Samoa/American Samoa, New Zealand and Australia bringing up the rear but don’t think I don’t want to hit every country on the planet!

There is an eight-month long world cruise that if I ever win the lottery is my very first purchase.

What is the best place for readers to learn more about you and your upcoming paranormal romances?

I’m terrible at this but my website is still a work in progress, months and months after I published my first book. I do have a private Facebook group for my fans, it’s called The Rare and Unknowns and I’m there way too much. They can also sign up for my newsletter but I’m all over the web as Shai August.

Sexy Mornings/Morning Blues

My Sexy Saturday

The theme for this week is A Sexy Morning. Don’t you just love it when you see characters have a snuggle down day that starts with an awesome morning? Or how about making love at dawn on a planet far away? Or watching the morning sky together for the very first time as the sun tops the ridge?  This is a theme about that special time of the day where only lovers go. Do they wake up next to each other and wonder how they got there? Or are they all over one another?

I’m a bit of a rebel, which is probably not a surprise to my husband. My excerpt comes from Captured & Seduced, the first book in my House of the Cat series. Camryn, my heroine, is fighting a losing battle trying to keep Ry at arm’s length, and she wakes up with a hangover and Ry. But that’s not the bad part…

The others started to stir. Camryn grabbed her clothes and turned her back on him to dress. Ry watched her the entire time. She felt it, fingers clumsy in her self-consciousness. The spot he’d touched on her shoulder itched beneath her tunic.

Rustling clothes behind her indicated Ry was dressing. The instinct to turn and watch almost got the better of her. Almost.

“Ah, you’re awake,” Mogens said, coming from inside the tender. Camryn noted his clear disapproval before he lifted his head to scan the angry green clouds low on the horizon. His face darkened rapidly. “Bad tidings in the clouds.”

Camryn fidgeted, her shoulder itchy and irritable beneath her clothes, the sullen trot-trot-trot in her head adding to her misery.

Tsking, Mogens studied her instead. “What is wrong with you, child? Have you been bitten by an insect?”

“Um no.” A weird sort of insect to leave tattoos while a person slept.

“Let me see,” Mogens said. “The last thing we need is for our trainer to become ill.”

“Show Mogens.” Ry’s soft voice came from behind. It wasn’t a request.

Camryn turned her back and allowed Mogens to lift her shirt. Chill bumps chased across her skin, blown by the cool morning breeze.

A hiss escaped the seer. “Ry, I told you to leave her alone. Too late now.” His eyes rolled back in his head and his high-pitched voice danced up and down in a singsong pattern. “The ghost walks beside you still. He has not left and will not leave while you need him. Bad day. Bad tidings.”

BLURB:

A shapeshifter and a wizard slugging it out, an alien world and a hell-horse…

Jockey Camryn O’Sullivan is an alcoholic on a downward spiral after the death of her husband. When aliens kidnap her, she’s both terrified and reluctantly fascinated by Ryman Coppersmith. She’s positive the weird attraction to her abductor is an anomaly. Something to ignore. She’ll train the aliens’ horse and they’ll return her home. Simple. There’s no need for sex or a stubborn male kitty-cat to replace the precious memories of her husband.

Murder. Betrayal. Banishment.

Feline shapeshifter Ry has experienced treachery of the worst kind. When his foster brother—the man who betrayed him—proposes a wager on a hell-horse race, the lure to clear his name is irresistible.

Camryn’s arrival triggers a jump in his already overactive sex drive. It’s a struggle to keep his hands off his beautiful captive. Something in his mysterious feline background compels him to chase her and the passion firing between them soars out of control. Ry doesn’t understand the mechanics of their attraction but knows he can’t afford to lose Camryn…despite his promise to return her home.

M is for Middlemarch

M

Middlemarch is a small country town in the South Island of New Zealand. A few years ago I happened to catch a special interest story on our local news. The town of Middlemarch had a shortage of women of marriageable age. In order to attract more women, the town decided to hold a ball.

This idea struck me as brilliant and a good plot for one of my stories. My erotic romance series Middlemarch Mates was born—a series of twelve romances that feature a community of black leopard shapeshifters who live and love in the country town of Middlemarch.

Emily Scarlet’s husband left her for his secretary and died in a car accident—all on the same day. Now, six months later, Emily has emerged from her chrysalis of painful memories. And to prove she has what it takes to attract a man, she’s determined to experience one perfect night of passion.

Feline shape shifter, Saber Mitchell has a problem with his four boisterous younger brothers. They’re out of control. It’s too late for him, but he hopes to get his brothers mated and settled, and the ball is the place to introduce them to marriageable women.

Unbridled sex is the last thing he plans on, but one glimpse of Emily Scarlet changes his mind. Sex with her is a necessity. They dance. They make love.

One thing is clear—a single night isn’t enough. Saber must have her for his mate, but Emily isn’t so easy to convince…or trust.
